[Music] the use of sedation and stimulation moves may not actually make a difference to your treatment if you believe that the body responds to achieve homeostasis then any treatment should in theory allow the body to react in the way it needs to however this film discusses the application of these techniques as there is much debate about how points should be worked to either sedate or stimulate the reflex in general deep pressure is thought to stimulate to help bring about a physical change whilst gentle Pressure Works more with the subtle energies we will discuss three main approaches to adapting your reflexology technique to address individual needs think about the person you are treating and use your intuition to decide if the reflex needs to be stimulated or calmed for example with the adrenal reflex if a client has pain it may be a good idea to stimulate the reflex to encourage the production of natural painkillers whilst a very stressed client it may be more appropriate to aim to sedate The Reflex to help calm the production of adrenaline remember to help relax a client ensure you use slow steady moves do not rush and this in itself can help calm remember to always work within your client's pain threshold even when [Music] stimulating the first approach to sedating and stimulating a reflex as described by Denise Teran is that to stimulate a reflex a deep pump in action should be used with the example of the adrenal gland the foot can be rotated laterally both hands come on top of the foot and both thumbs pump into the kidney and adrenal reflexes to sedate The Reflex the thumb can simply be placed on the reflex point and gentle pressure applied the second approach described by Ruth Hull is the wind technique where fingers thumbs or Knuckles rotate anticlockwise to sedate a reflex or clockwise to stimulate a reflex this is similar to the Convention of screw threads to make a screw active or wind it in a clockwise motion is used and to release a screw an anticlockwise movement is needed the third commonly used method is also called the unwind technique as described by Suzanne enza this differs in approach by the direction of the action depending on the foot she only describes a way to sedate a reflex just as with the previous technique to sedat reflex an anticlockwise move is made on the right foot but a clockwise move is used on the left [Music] foot this technologes the energy or Chi flows around the body and flows down the inside or medial aspect of the leg up and around the foot down the lateral foot and up the lateral leg therefore this move mimics the flow of the energy around the body and will help to restore Natural Balance and calm reflexes it is for you to decide on the approach you wish to take think about what feels right for you even by thinking about what technique you will use to sedata a reflex is likely to slow your moves down which in itself will help calm the client reflexology and hand reflexology should not be used as an alternative to medical advice [Music]
